I have a 1998 Ranger XLT 4.0 4WD with an 8.8 3.73 LSD. Due to a minor accident I have to replace the entire rear end assembly. I found a cheap junkyard 8.8 3.73 rear end from a 1999 ranger 4.0 FWD but it is an open differential. Would using this cause any problems other than the obvious loss of performance of a LSD? Would it cause any issues with the 4WD? My mindset is that as long as its the same gearbox and ratio it shouldnt be a problem but I thought id throw it out there to minds greater than mine.

No issue. You'll just notice a lot less traction.

The perfect is the enemy of the good.
But isn't it true he can put a locker if he wants? With LSD you'd have to switch it to open to put in a locker, true?

Keep your mind like an umbrella, it only works if its open... Continually learning.
Correct, as long as the gear ratio matches front axle and rear axle the 4WD system will work fine. Open, LSD, or solid locking devise in the carrier doesn't matter. You can add a LSD / solid locker later if you wish.

Yes a lunchbox locker goes in an open carrier, if it's a full case locker it doesn't matter since you are replacing the carrier anyway.
