So my inlaws need front end work done on their '06 Suzuki XL7 and the shop they took it to says it's gonna cost 1500 and all they're gonna replace is brake pads and rotors. Of course, I got volunteered to do the work. My worry is, am I missing something? I can't imagine any brake job costing that much. I've never worked on anything foreign though. If anyone has any insight, knowledge of what I may be getting into, let me know. Thanks.

If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
was that for all 4 wheels?

maybe the rotors need to be pressed on the hub? if I were you I would log onto autozone.com and read the repair manual for it ..... I was quoted $1700 for a complete 4 wheel brake job on my old '73 waggy ........ it only needed about $500 in parts to convert to 4 wheel disc brakes .......

my brother was quoted $1200 for a 4 wheel brake job on his 2000 Jetta, for pads and rotors ...... took us longer to jack it up 1 wheel at a time than it did to change the rotors and pads ......

I've done 4 wheel pads and rotors/drums many times. At the dealership. I've never written a brake estimate the came up over 700, and I think that 700ish one was a full size super-duty.

I've only done a couple of $1000 brake jobs, and they were on diesel 3/4 and 1 ton, and of course semi's/ dumps cost that much

Not on a Suzuki, that is insane.

A friend of mine got an estimate for brakes on her Volvo S40, which was like $900. Those fawking parts are expensive! The shop wanted like $120/rotor. She did need new calipers on the front too, but we ended up doing it for under $300.

I had to spend $1100 on getting new front brakes on the motorhome when they failed in flag staff

Thanks for your input. I thought it sounded pretty outrageous. They said it was only the front brakes too. From what I'd gathered on the Autozone site, the brakes and bearings are seperate units on that car. Just for pads and rotors there, it was only 150 bucks and they don't carry the pads in stock but I'm still dumbfounded by the 1500 quote.

I just checked rockauto.com for part prices and if they replaced all the parts with new you could not spend 800.00 thats calipers, lines, rotors, pads etc

You forget a shop has to mark up it's parts if not at least 10% to pay for the expenses of the business plus the labor, and doing all what you listed in labor is probably close to 5 hrs so 67 x 5 335 + 1080 in my normal markup = 1415 plus taxes, and all, so if they did a complete brake job end to end, then yes this price would be correct, but NO WAY for just fron pads and rotors

So I found out today the ordeal with it. He decided to spit a pad out and drove it like that for some time without telling anyone (18 year old) so the caliper is shot cause of course it is on the piston side. Spittin fluid everywhere. No parts stores carry a caliper and one from the dealer costs 350 bucks. Then of course all the markup. Thanks all for your input.
