I know i have a 4.0 L Ranger. The only thing i'm curious about is if it is a SOHC or a OHV, and what is the difference between the two? As far as i knew the main difference is that the SOHC i guess had a few more Hp's? How can i tell if mine is a SOHC or OHV? I thought it would say somewhere in the engine bay but i can't find anywhere that says what engine it is. Any thoughts? PS. i know this is a stupid question but if you knew me it would probably just be normal...haha.

well after a little research seems the SOHC was introduced to the ranger in 2001. So unless mine is a late production 2000 then seems to me i have the OHV. Are there any other big differences between the SOHC and OHV. I was reading at ranger powersports and it seems that the early SOHC rangers had a timing chain rattle that was a pain in the ass to get ford to fix up, so maybe i'm glad i have a OHV?

Totally different engines! Parts don't interchange. The sohc is the newer engine and far surpasses the ohv 4.0...although the 4.0 was no slouch itself.

Nomenclature is never a stupid question,

OHV stands for Over Head Valves. (cam and pushrods)

SOHC stands for Single OverHead Cam. (Camshaft direct to valves over each head)

Good luck

Well in this one case..

SOHC stands for single overhead camshaft...YEP! It does, but it means TWO overhead camshafts...don't it.

so basically the main difference is the OHV has pushrods inbetween the cam and valves and the SOHC does not?

The main difference is that they're two totally different engines, that both displace about four liters.

That's zackly why I wrote it!

Over EACH head, right JIm? maybe you are thinking DOHC.
Our SOHC engines have a single camshaft..on EACH HEAD!! So in effect the name should be DOHC.. But dohc has alrady been taken by heads with TWO camshafts on each head..
Our engines have two camshafts..

an SOHC motor has c am in each head that is ran by timing chains off the crank. a OHV has a single cam in the BLOCK and then has pushrod and rocker arms and what not. SOHC is in 01 and newer so if its 200 or older you have the OHV
