88 ranger. sometimes when i go to put my truck into reverse or into first gear its really hard to push the shifter into place. kinda have to wiggle it around sometimes to get it into gear then its a ruff shift. sometimes (rarely) its rugged shifting into other gears... thanks for the help

also anyone know of a rough estimate on a front en rebuild? my 4x4 front drivers side axel is broken and wont come out, a friend tried hammering it out even and no budge, said i might need a whole new front end...

it it auto or manual?
if its manual, before u put in to reverse, throw it into first real quick, then reverse, that will stop the reverse idler gear and should solve that problem.

It's manuel. It's hard to shift into first and reverse. Sometimes really hard and it seems like a new gear inbetween reverse and 4th (doesn't actually shift into a new gear but shifter moves into that spot

Check and change the fluid. Does it grind any?

Just so you know, you have the FM-146 tranny. Mine is hard to shift into first gear when I am rolling over 15 miles per hour because the syncros are trying to bring the clutch disc up to speed.

Is it a pain to shift while you are moving or at a stop light and need to take off? If it is at a stop light, drop it into second first then first before you release the clutch and see what happens. That is what I do almost all the time because the high first gear. Also, mine is hard to shift when it is cold, but after a 2-3 mins it is fine.

As for the axle, is it stuck on the hub/ brake side or the diff?

I would check the fluid, and replace it with gear oil, NOT ATF.
