Hi again,
Haven't had the starting issue with my 95 Ranger for a while. Been driving it all over (a good 1000+ miles this month at least), and everything runs well (when it starts, which is 98% of the time). She only has 140,000 on her. The issue used to be very common, but after doing some work (I've outlined the work below) I now have an issue every two to four weeks. I drive several hundred miles per week in it, and don't have any issues - usually until about the time I stop worrying about it. Then I will have issues again.
Today I had to go get it emissions tested. I went and as always you have to turn the truck off and they take it from there. I parked on the table area and handed over the keys, but then it would not start. I drove it a good 100 miles today without any issues, but then it wouldn't start. We pushed it to the parking lot and I came back about three hours later. It cranked right up and I drove it home like nothing ever happened.
I have had intermittent starting issues all summer. I've replaced tons of parts trying to chase it, and sometimes a part will really fix the issue, but then it will come back again. When I have the issue, the truck will initially fire right up, then it will sputter and stall out. Trying to start again will result in more sputtering and then eventually no firing at all.
Here is what I have done:
New ECT sensor
New ACT sensor
New fuel pump
New fuel pump relay
New spark plugs
New plug wires
Checked for bad wiring
Checked for spark (I have it)
Checked for fuel (when it doesn't start, I don't have fuel pressure)
I can also confirm that if the truck starts, it will not stall out, runs smoothly, idles smoothly, has plenty of power (for a 2.3l LOL).
Another thing to note: when I go back and try to start it again later after it has died, I always hear a loud snap which sounds like it comes from near the AC compressor. Once I hear that it will ALWAYS start, and always runs perfectly for at least another week (it has been nearly a month this time).
Last: I just moved from Greenville SC to Phoenix AZ (quite a climate change - from mildly hot and very humid to very hot and dry).
Any help would be appreciated. This is my daily driver (and only vehicle) and I need it to work well!
