Hey first post here.... lot of good reading on TRS.
I would like to comment as a sport trac enthusiast...
Let me tell you why this is a perfect vehicle for my situation... and why it is not a "lame" truck.
I drive a ranger now, but I have to get rid of it pretty soon because it is eating up the fuel (19-20mpg on highway). I drive 100miles+ everyday for work reasons so I need an economy car. I bought the truck 4 yrs ago when I was building a house and it worked out great.. but now its time to move on. However, I still need a truck in the family for picking up salt, fuel, mulch (to name a few) for everyday living. Now, pretty much even the most economic truck only gets about what? 26mpg at best.... this being said I need a car... and I am hoping to get something in the 32-40mpg range.
However, my wife only drives about 20-30 miles per day to her work and back or maybe into town. She has '03 monte carlo.. which gets about 30-32 on the highway. Once we get this paid off I am going to take it... to haul me to work and back.
Now.....what vehicle would fit perfect for my wife to drive....... Yeah you guessed it... a 07 or 08 sport trac. Why do you ask?
First, I want a truck so that we can pick up things that you don't want inside the cab or that just wont fit.
Second, My expecting wife wants a SUV like all women because it sits higher and has cargo room.
Third, the 4x4 can make tracks through the snow after bad winter nights in my 1400' driveway so the low ground clearance of the monte does not get hung up.. On evenings I'll have time to remove the snow with my tractor for the next day.
Forth, has anyone noticed how luxurious the limiteds are??? They are flipping sweet.
Fifth, the 6sp auto V8with 292hp and 300lbs of torque combined with the class IV tow package will pull my 3500lb tractor on a 18ft car hauler. (7900lbs tow capacity). Now I am most likely going to get a weight distribution support to help with the tongue weight but to do this once in a while to help out friends a family with the tractor will safe from having to buy or borrow another truck to tow it.
And it will do all this with and get 20mpg (unloaded) on the highway.
Sixth, 5 star safety rating in front and rear.
So why is it lame?
Why not get the F-150?
1. I don't need a truck that big.
2. Does the F-150 have independent rear suspension? Simply the ride of a F150 is suckier.
3. The price tag of a loaded limited F-150 supercab with similar options to the limited sport trac is 40k+ compared to the 35k MSRP of the sport trac.
I guess my point is ... every forum I go to people are bashing this vehicle... but you dont realize the population that it was designed to fit. I cannot wait to get one... (monte is paid off in aug. of 08).
