I have an 86 ranger and today looked at door and it says built 12/95. What is this considered? I need a head gasket set but don't know exactly what year. Also where can I find full build date? Like month day and year? Thanks.

Anything with a build date after August is considered the next model year. The best way to know what year you are looking at as far as parts is to look at the cert label under the hood. It will have a line saying "This vehicle conforms to emissions standards for new model year XXXX vehicles". That is the year you buy parts for.

For a full build date, you gotta get your build sheet. Ford does keep them on file, but I don't know who you have to call to get it.

I am hoping you meant to type 12/86... by the body of your truck it looks like am 86ish..No way it is a 96 for sure. I would go with 1986.

My bad. On the door it says 12/85. Under the hood it says 86. But i need build day because autozone has a set for 7/15/86 or 7/16/86. I dont know which i need. Also I don't know where all the other gaskets go that come with the head gasket set. I know where most go but some i dont.

Ok, I am going to have to ask you to use some critical thinking skills here.

Your door says 12/85.

There is a set of gaskets for up to 7/15/86.

There is a set of gaskets for after 7/16/86.

Which one of those groups do you suppose 12/85 would fall into?

I would say 7/15/86. I just got confused with the door and underhood year. ive mostly used the underhood year though. But thanks for help.

That is because your truck was built after August of 1985, making it an 86 model year.

An 85 MY would still fall into the earlier side of the production split, which still means you didn't think about it hard enough.

So my truck is pretty much a 86 correct? It does have an 86 motor and everything in it right? Also was I right with the gasket set?

I was going to take your quiz Adsm. However, it appears to be multiple choice, but I don't know which is A, and which is B.

Seriously though - my 97 F150 has a manufacture date of 6/96.

The 1997 F-150 was an exception to the general rule that next model years start in August of the previous year. Becuase the '97 was such a departure from the normal pickup and Ford was really proud of this they began selling them in early 1996 (it might have even been January, 1996).

My credo
I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
So my truck is pretty much a 86 correct? It does have an 86 motor and everything in it right?

You already answered your own questions...

Under the hood it says 86.

But i need build day because autozone has a set for 7/15/86 or 7/16/86.
You're getting good at answering your own questions...

On the door it says 12/85.

We got our first '97 f150 in Feb of '96 at the dealership I was working at. :icon_confused:

Damn it.... I got excited when I saw your post Sno... I thought it was multiple choice too.

The 1997 F-150 was an exception to the general rule
So was the 91 Explorer.

Good point. I can also think of 83 Ranger, 99 Super Duty and 65 Mustang (depending on whether you buy into the 64 1/2 model year) to name a few more that broke the rules.

Look at the last couple of years of the Mustang - there are 2014's already on the street, building started in Feb. My 2013 was built in June 2012.
