I was wondering if anyone had any clue why when i took apart my 1986 ford ranger 4X4, it didn't have any thrust bearings or "toothed washers/spacers"
It does have warn manual locking hubs but in all my research to put it back together everyone says to install the toothed washer back on. Does it have to be put back on or would it be fine without?

Thanks any help is appreciated.

I wouldnt recommend going without any of the washers and especially the toothed washer on the hub setup. The washers help make up the gap between the c clip and lock nut on manual hubs and cam on automatic hubs.

The assembly if room to move can work itself right off the spindle and cause you horrible problems. The regular washers make up most of the gap before the c clip and the toothed washer not only closes that gap but cant slide past the c clip in extreme cases because the teeth are in the spindle splines and not just around the spindle itsself. Even a regular washer could slip over the c clip in the right situation because there isnt much of a lip on the c clip.

When i got my ranger it didn't have the thrust washers either and what would happen is my stub shaft would slide in, and out of the lockout and i would lose 4x4, go to a local junk yard and get a set of thrust washers and c clips and put em on, shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks.
