Okay, I can pick up a front Dana 60 from a dodge one ton for next to nothing. I thought It might be useable for my '91 explorer project but now I'm not sure. This axle is from a 1997 D3500 diesel dually. There are no lockout hubs on it and its got the central axle disconnect setup on the passengerside. All I know about it was it has 143K on the odo., 3.54 open diff. and the truck had been in an engine fire. Just wondering what everyones opinion is on this particular model of the Dana 60. Thanks

its useless to most people, with the vaccum disconnect it works half ass at best on the dodge/chebbie solid axles, and if im not mistaken that dodge rear should be passenger side drop, making it even more so useless to you, but if you can get it for dirt cheap u might be able to sell it at a profit and get a axle u can use

They are driver's side drop so that's right. The center axle disconnect (CAD), makes a weak point in the axle. Solid shafts would be stronger, but you're planning on putting a D60 in an Explorer so you shouldn't have any problems. The CAD can be converted from vacuum operated to cable operated for more reliability. The only other bad thing about that axle is it has unit bearings and no selectable hubs. If you can get it cheap go for it!

Not to mention that until 2003 when they went to AAM, they were still low pinion...

The inner shafts I believe are 30 spline on that axle, too.

Skip it. Look for pretty much any D60 from a Ford, but skip anything from '99-'01 SRW, these LOOK like 60s, but have D50 parts in the diff.
'05up ones are gonna be the strongest stock 60s, if the fact that they're 35-spline right out to the hubs is true.

Earlier 60s ('78, 79, '86-'97) have more aftermarket parts available though.

400 is cheap. I paid around a grand for the my Front 60, but I ended up never using it so I resold it for a grand.

Definitely sounds like a bargain. What year, hubs? Depending on the year, be sure to double check that it is actually a D60 and not an 8 lug D44 or a D50. Most scrap yards don't know the difference.

That axle is under a late 70's F350(Even said Ranger on the side emblems). What can I check to make sure I don't get hosed? Do they have axle codes on the door stickers. This scrapyard does not let people return parts. Everything is sold as is!

On that truck...
Kingpins w/open knuckle = D60
Balljoints = D44.

Other ways to I.D.:
The size of the locking hubs is very noticeably bigger on the 60 than a 44.
There will usually be a "60" or "44" cast into one of the webs supporting the axletubes.
You could also take a sheet of BOM numbers with you to compare the BOM # on it (stamped on the face of the axletube).
