Hey guys I am looking for a 99-01 explorer/mountaineer V-8 to put in my 2000 ranger 3.0L stick. Well I think I have almost all the info I need after weeks of searching on RPS, here and Ranger-Forums but just have a couple questions still. First off I have a manual transmission in my truck now and want to keep it that way. I was told that a 97-03 F-150 4.2L V-6 2wd manual transmission (M5ODR2) will bolt up to the 5.0L motor and will keep my shifter in the same spot in the floor as I have the M5ODR1 transmission. Is this true? Is anyone using this combo? I just want to make sure before I start spending $$ on stuff that I have been told MIGHT work lol. Also if this is true and I do that transmission what starter should I use? Because on my ranger it bolts onto the transmission so would I have to use the F-150 starter? Or would that even work on the explorer? Can the explorer's starter bolt up to the F-150 transmission? And I know it is mostly plug and play but have read on here in another thread that there are a couple of wires that need rewired for a couple things. Does anyone have any more info on that and which wires etc? Thanks in advance!

the v6 2000 is plug and play with the 98-01 wiring.just a pats reset.
are you a 4x4 or 4x2.4x2 id use a tremec 3550 with a mid shift. 4x4 id try the 97 f150
use the explorer starter or 4:1 gear mini for stang

Thanks! I was told that 99-01 were plug and play though...not 98's. Now I am confuse because I had the chance to get a steal on a 98 motor! :temper:

*EDIT* Ok now that I think of it maybe I was told that the 99-01 was the easiest. Think I was told that pre 99's had a different fuel system and I would have to redo some stuff if I used one older than that. There is a 98 5.0 in town with lower mileage for $399 which is why I ask. If the 98's are same as the 99-01 then I am going to go buy this one!

The difference between the '98' and '99' is the change to the returnless fuel system. The sensors can be very year specific. If you can get a low mileage 98 in good shape, I'd get it. I'll send you a PM and explain. Where you located?

I am in Kansas City, Mo but now that I think of it I can't do anything older than a 2000 anyhow to stay legal. Forgot about all that

so you will need to mockup your engine mounting plates.the ex mounts will not work as is.

get the trans harness also with whatever motor year you get.they must match.
