After my truck had been sitting a couple months i went out and started it just to have said wire smoke itself right out of the sheathing. I have been looking online and at wiring diagrams and cannot seem to find any reference to this wire.
the truck is an 85 2wd 5speed ranger
thanks
Dustin

Can you explain more. Wire went to and from where. Pictures would help us to identify the problem too if you can. The more information you give the more likely we can help.

Yes, pics would help...

It sounds like the carburetor choke wire but can't tell without knowing things like fuel injection or carburetor...and where the wire was connected...could be alternator wire but my mind is fuzzy on the details.

The on-line manual has wiring diagrams that might be more effective than say a Haynes...the Haynes manual I have doesn't even show the white wire on the alternator circuit for the 2.0...but there is a white wire...

its a 2.3 fuel injected. the wire came from the ignition switch, i didnt take it much further than the column cause i would have to take the dash out, but it looks like it goes to the fuse panel.
I can post pictures later if i have too, its just a pain to do it with the gear i got.
thanks
Dustin

OK, that makes more sense...I just ckecked the on-line manual and the diagram there did not list a purple/white wire from the ignition...it may be in the engine controls section but not nesessarily...

Could be something to do with voltage regulator but you might want to check the digrams yourself...

yeah, i scanned over a bunch of wiring diagrams but none of them came up with anything useful, on another note i founds a set of two wires going into a plug on top of a brake proportioning valve both purple/white but they were in good shape.

Do you still have power to the Ign. switch, lights, etc. What ever doesn't work anymore is a prime candidate for the problem. Check fuse boxes for burnt fuses and wires in it ?
