Snow is here like many places and my truck wont go or stop in 2wd. The 4wd is working at the moment but it has a few problems and I dont wanna get stranded.

Ok when I first switch it to 4 high it takes it a minute to lock in and will usualy make a bad grinding/slipping sound untill it locks in (front tires not spinning) Once if finialy locks in its fine.

Then once I get rolling on the snow/ice in high at around 20-30mph it will make a loud pop every so often witch sounds just like when I turn the 4x4 off.

I was thinking maybe the front auto hubs? But it sounds more like the Tcase area.

Thanks
its a 92 ranger 4.0 auto

If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
if its a manual shift T-case ...... adjust the shifter.

if its an electric shift T-case ...... sounds like the shift motor is on its way out.....

search the Tech Library for ways to solve either.

What? Did you even read his post?

A bad shift motor WILL NOT cause popping. Either it works or it doesn't.

My best guess without seeing it would be your auto hubs are shot.

yeah ok .... you have had every problem ever with an RBV.... So RBV King ..... explain why the electric motor could not also have a short in it that causes it to pop back and forth ....... because I have had a shift motor do this on a 92 Explorer .... and a 91 F/S Bronco..... Just because it is not the most likely cause does not mean it can't happen ... if it was a bad or broken hub then it would not feel like it was in 4wd at all ...... so ........ suck my grits ............. going to add ...... I DON'T CARE IF YOU ARE A MODERATOR......

yea its been in 4wd for 2 days now and the 4wd works good, its just oncei get up to speed it likes to pop and it really jerks the whole truck kinda. Its not good but i have no choice but to run in 4 high till this ice melts. I cant take off in 2wd or stop in 2wd.

Maybe its got a short in the 4 low motor? or are they the same. I duno I thought this might be a more common problem.
thanks

Love productive posts. Could this be the chain popping (inside transfer case)? Either way I would start with the shift motor, it shouldn't take a minute to get into 4wd.

My understanding is the light comes on, but then it doesn't receive power to the front wheels for about a minute, meaning something is slow to engage. Be it the motor or the hubs, with a popping also and the whole truck jerking, I am leaning towards the hubs or u-joints. I would venture to say it is a combination of more than one thing.

But what do I know, not like I've had EVERY RBV problem out there.:shok:

the hubs engage with motion. the axle has to turn to engage the hubs. there is something inside the T-case that spins up the front drive shaft to engage the hubs while the vehicle is in motion. If stopped when you hit the button..... the act of moving causes the auto bubs to lock.......

it very well could be the chain...... it is not hubs causing it to pop out of 4wd .... on a 92 the auto hubs either work or they don't ...... so if it fails once it is failed until it is fixed.

it is a possibility but highly unlikely .... if he is in 4wd right now and working good the problem is likely a short .... be it in the shift motor, switch, wiring, or ........

Right...because no one has EVER had a hub fail to where it ratchets and slips without locking all the way in.

They work or they don't....

Muahahahaha....
