first off you need to fix the release spring[ obviously], then check the cable that runs to the back to the splitter. you should find at the splitter: a long spring,@ 14inches, with a threaded adjustment that runs through a tab[ for lack of better term] with cables that run to both back tires. first make sure the spring is snug but not under tension with brake released and make sure that the cables are seated in the adjustment tab, you want them a little snug but when you pull on each individual cable you should be able to get a little deflection, in otherwords the ball crimped on the end of the cable should be seated in the socket on the adjuster. if that checks out set your parking brake by hand so that you can count the rachet clicks, i think you want at least 6-7 clicks or 2/3's pedal travel. after you set pedal travel then you get back under truck and tighten your adjuster so that your cables on both sides are tight and under full tension. before you tighten adjuster you will also need to check condition of back brakes. it seems to me that parking brakes should be able to be set up the same way on most vehicles as this is how i set up the parking brake on my camaro and my fullsize ford. if there is something i missed or forgot i hope someone else will correct me, as i have not adjusted the parking brake on a ranger before. also before you start, spray your adjusting hardware down with PB Blast or somesuch rust and corrosion breaker.
