Need help with a conversion. I am Not very familiar with Ford engines and transmissions. I am installing a 2.3 engine in my 25 T Bucket and want to use a non-computer controlled trans. What transmission can I use with this engine? The only transmission that I can think of is the C4. Has anyone done this conversion.

C3 and C4 transmissions were both used with the 2.3L Lima engine, and the A4LD can be modified to work without a computer. An early A4LD from 85-88 would be easiest.

Those are the only automatics that I can think of that will work.

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
I would use a C4 as a first choice because they're easier to work on, have way better aftermarket support, and are stronger than C3's or A4LD's. You need a special tool to align and assemble the front pump on a C3 or an A4LD( which is a C3 derivative/descendant) which may be hard to come by unless you have access to dealer tools. The best thing about a C3 is the way they fail, the reverse/high clutch pack seal tears and you instantly lose 3rd gear so they don't burn up the clutches and create a foul smelling mess like most failed automatics. Useless side note: if you ordered trailer tow on a late Pinto(yes, that existed) you got a C4 instead of a C3.

Thank you guys for all the info. I will now go searching for a 2.3 and a C4
