new engine problems

i have an 1987 ford ranger and just replaced the 2.9 with a new long block. everything is back in and seems to be ok. idles around 1000 and sounds good but is a little rough. i checked the vacuum pressure and its 19-20lbs and i hooked up a code reader to see if there is anything wrong. only codes that came out were about a bad egr not shutting and 77 cause i did the throttle test wrong but when i first started the test when it says how many cyclenders its checking it only said 4. not to sure what thats about? and then the other problem is when im driving it has stalled randomly and when i down shift from 3 to 2 to slow down it sounds like its back fires or miss fires and then will stall out. thats the big problem that i have no idea about. any help would be awesome. thanks

I would just keep driving it, try to get it broken in. After the first oil change, clear the codes, then drive for 1000 miles or so and see if any codes pop up. The PCM has to learn the engine.

Double check that you hooked up all of the vacuum lines.
