I just have a general question about the vacuum hubs versus AVM hubs. Which one is stronger, putting on a set of AVM hubs or permanently locking the vacuum hubs? I'm just curious because I"m considering getting a newer truck.

Well it depends on how new you go... I think 98 - 00 possibly 01 was the only years for vaccum hubs, after that they just switched to live axles anyways. And technically the strongest solution for the 98 -00 is to swap in an explorer front end as they were live axles already.

Personally, I've been quite pleased with just modifying the stock housings to be selectable. I have not heard about anyone blowing the stock hubs apart, so thats a plus. That, and it was a free way to get selectable hubs.

just curious as to why you want a newer truck....

no offense to the guys with newer trucks, but the TTB is much more capable off-road than the torsion bar IFS.....

I wouldn't get rid of my current truck. I just though maybe for the wife. She won't take it off road but I would want it work when she needs it.

The regular vaccum hubs usually work just fine, especially if your not doing any off roading and just the occational 4x4 for a slick road. Mine have worked every time i have needed them too except one this one particular beach where they just refuse to work. I keep my TTB ranger just for off roading for the most part anyways...

If you are getting it for your wife then I wouldn't worry about getting manual hubs till the stockers give you trouble, I'm sure she doesn't want to get out of the truck to lock in hubs every time. lol

I haven't had any issues with the stock auto-hubs on my '94 Ranger. Granted, I just use it winter, but occasionally, I'll pop in and out of 4WD just to make sure everything's working right.
