If you want to shoot Deer you want either a 30caliber or a 7mm (7mm-08 is nice)

If you want to shoot coyote and don't want to blow a huge unrepairable hole in the hide you want some sort of 223Rem.

In either case a bolt action rifle is usually going to be best for accuracy and precision.

And to put a point on it many rifles will do the job, however any rifle you get that isn't
a Remington 700 is a rifle you will eventually wish was a remington 700

It's cheaper in the long run to scrimp and save and buy a better rifle than it is to sell off
the rifle you should not have bought in the first place.

there are reasons why the Remington 700 has been made with only minor changes
for fifty years.

What is really silly is people acting all nostalgic about whatever piece of crap they bought first
and refusing to sell it because "it's my first rifle"

MY First Rifle was a Marlin bolt action in 22mag.
I sold it when I realized that it was pretty much burned out
and I bought a slightly used 10-22 which I still have 30 years
(two stocks & three scopes) later.

If you want to do "Varmint shooting" there is the Remington 700VSSF-II and there is everything else.

I don't believe the Remington 700 is the perfect rifle, but if you buy anything else
you can spend the price of another entire rifle to make it AS good as a Remington 700,
and it would cost even more to make that other rifle "better".

I should point out that I've had one Remington 700 long enough that it's on it's third barrel
and the replacement for the third barrel, barrel #4 is leaning against my desk as I type this reply.
The first barrel was chambered in 25-06 as was the second. the third barrel was in 30-06 as is the
new 24" stainless steel replacement.

As for the 270Winchester? good cartridge, but if you already own a 30-06 I've gotta ask "why?"

My other piece of advise is that if you choose one particular brand and model of rifle then you
decide you want another chambering for some other different task, but another of the same
make/model in that different chambering.

The worst part about a 30-06 is that it makes it really hard to justify having more than one rifle. :icon_twisted:

And I will never own another Remington by-product. :icon_thumby:

I decided on that caliber due to availability, and considering big game hunting.I could only afford rifle, and it had to fullfill range shooting, predator, and big game,if not for big game,I would have gone with the .270

Guns I would buy by brand: Ruger, Marlin, Remington, Savage, Howa, Remington, and Thompson Center.

Models I would buy for a good starter gun by each of these. Ruger all american, marlinX7(theres actually a few different ones), Remington 700 or the new 783!, Savage (110,111,116,10,stevens 200),Howa 1500, Thompson Center venture or dimension.

I would probubly not buy a 30-06 over a .270win. A .270 is pretty much a 30-06 necked down to a .277 bullet. Has a flatter bullet for a little loss in energy.

If I was gonna look at short chambers, I'd look at .243, 7mm-08, .308. Long chambers i'd go with 25-06, .270win, .280rem, 7mm rem mag, 300win mag.

For reloading purposes, you can reload three guns really with one case design. 25-06,.270,30-06. This makes them all a good choice as brass is more likely to be found. .308 is probubly the most widely used bullet case, and I believe the .243 and 7mm-08 shares the same brass as .308 so both should be good. 7mm rem mag is probubly my favorite as its a flat bullet with a great bullet selection. 300win mag is probubly the .30cal I would chose as its faster than a .308 and has resonable ammo.

I realize you allready got your gun, but if in the future you do another purchase, use some of this to help with a decision. For stock sake, get a boyds thumbhole. you'll have to get on a backorder, but its the best deal out there for the best stock design.

Well,I suppose I should have discussed calibers with yall more in depth before buying, but I was too anxious.I do have a question on ammunition,I currently shoot rem core lokt 165gr.Would 180gr be better at longer distances, and what is yalls experience with Black Hills ammo?
I am used to shooting M4,249,240B(low recoil),good thing I wear eye pro(almost broke my shooting glasses,my bipods jump off the bench at the range when I shoot,LOL.Its accurate though, looking at the blackhawk axiom U/L due to very bad carpultunnel,I need a pistol grip,it just feels better

The lighter the better for distance, the heavier ones hit harder but run out of poop faster. Bigger critters will need the bigger bullet though.

I wouldn't worry too much about your caliber choice, it is still darn good for the ranges most people shoot them at.

I appreciate ALL the replies. It will be a while before I do anything to the rifle.I almost forgot I own a RBV,that needs attention too.
Thanks again for helping me choose a decent rifle, maybe my next one will be a .270 in a differnt brand.

Personally I like things made in the U.S.A. so I would suggest a Henry rifle, Got a .22 for shooting raccoons and opossums that try to eat my chickens and rabbits.

Henry's are nice but they don't really have anything that competes with a bolt action rifle. Their 30-30 is as close as it gets... and that ain't very close.

For long range you want a bullet with the highest B.C. Usally that means a heavier bullet. I'd look for one thats close to .6?? I know Berger VLDs are about the best. You also want to see what grain bullet your gun likes. One guy might have luck with 168, another 180. You just have to shoot and see what makes a tighter group.
