Manual trans oil seal orientation

I removed the input shaft oil seal plate to replace the oil seal and there's an inner oil seal that doesn't look right (there was RTV in there so someone has already messed with this transmission):

Shouldn't the seal be facing towards the bearing??

My credo
to prevent Found On the Road Dead, Fix Or Repair Daily
This is a total wild @$$ guess. That is the original seal and somebody drove it in because he couldnt get a bite on it to pull the seal. Then they drove a new seal in. A hack move for sure, but it got the guy out from under the truck. and the truck out the door.

Like adsm says spring in almost any case the spring will face the oil side, keeping it in be sure and lube the seal lips before in stalling, point where seal contacts shaft
