Hi all. I'm new here, and fairly new to Rangers, but not new to turning wrenches. I recently bought a 94 Ranger 4.0/4x4 for dirty cheap because the A4LD was bad. I rebuilt the 4R55 in my 95 last year with great results, but the A4LD has not proven so successful... anyway, I'm contemplating a manual swap. I found a good deal on the swap parts, but the stuff is in a 2006 4.0 truck. will this trans work? Also how different will the master/slave/pedal situation be? TIA for your input.

They are substantially different, and I can't really spell it out for you, but one major thing I know is a clutch pedal will need to be installed.
The transmission will also be a major consideration because it is a much later version

Welcome to TRS :)

A4LD and the 4R or 5R are the same transmissions, the A4LD just has a different valve body, FYI

If you have a 4.0l 4x4 then you can only use an M5OD-R1(M5R1) from/for a 4.0l 4x4, 2WD won't work
M5R1 from a 3.0l or 4 cyl also won't work

But yes, any M5R1 from a 1990-2011 4.0l Ranger or B-series 4x4 can be used(1994 and up B-series)
And will bolt up to your current BW1354 transfer case, need that because it has the 4x4 speedometer cable hook up, after 1997 they do not have that

The 2001 - 2011 M5R1s have a different shifter arm, so get the M5R1 complete with shifter

I think you can use the clutch/brake pedal assembly from 1993 to 1997 Ranger in a 1994

And you will need a 1990-1996 4.0l Flywheel, 6 bolts, 1997 and up 4.0ls were changed to 8 bolts

The M5R1s use ATF, yes automatic transmission fluid in a manual transmission, Mercon V was spec

Your 1994 4.0l computer will have automatic transmission software, so it will "look for" the transmission solenoids with Key on, and won't find them, lol
It will then turn on the CEL(check engine light) and set codes for solenoid faults
Everything will work fine, so driveable
Idle will be high because automatics have higher idles
You can swap in a 1994 4.0l manual trans computer, plug and play, if you can find one, 2WD or 4x4 don't matter to the engine computer

If you are in an area that has emissions test then you will need a computer that has that requirement, "earth" was not specific enough :)

Thank you, Ron! This was exactly the information I needed! I bought the truck dirty cheap, and now have close to $500 in the A4LD, which still doesn't work right, and I think I'm ready to cut my losses on the auto.... the truck has 33" tires on it, so the auto won't have a good life anyway....

Hello beast. I’m Rick from TN… also on Earth. If you do the swap, would you be interested in selling the fill tube and dipstick from your old A4LD?
