Manual hub/tcase pops out of 4wd

I have a 93 4.0L 5spd ranger with factory manual hubs and transfer case, when I use 4wd in Hi or Low with light throttle it will stay engaged below 2000rpm, but after that it will kick out and the rear tires will usually start spinning, I know I have 1 U-joint (front passenger) that could use replacing, but I don't think that would cause the transfer case to kick out.

Does anyone have suggestions to what would cause this?

The stock auto hubs are pretty crappy and tend to lock in and out. Your best bet is a set of manual hubs. Easy to install and can be found pretty cheap.

miss ajusted transfer case shifter? but if it pops out in 4 low i would think that it would go to neutral.

He already has manual hubs. No sense in replacing them until they are known bad.

Since it pops out in both high and low, a misadjusted linkage could be the problem. Mainly though, it pops out of 4-LO when the linkage is out of alignment.

Best thing to start with is put the t-case all the way into 4-LO and climb under the truck. Adjust the shifter by loosening the big bolt and pushing the shift lever up until it hits the detent on the shift gate. Retighten everything.

It is pretty self explanitory when you get under there. You will see the lever, and the "gate" it rides in.

The big bolt is a pivot for the lever. It's the little bolt that is used for adjustment.

thanks for the suggestions, I'll adjust the linkage and keep this thread updated with progress.

robo: why would worn trans/motor mounts cause the case to kick out? I can only think that if they were worn so badly that the drivetrain torqued over to such an extreme angle the tcase linkage kicked the truck out of 4wd...?

The T-case linkage is firmly bolted to the transmission, as is the T-case.

Movement due to loose/broken motormounts? No.

Mis-adjustment? Much more likely.

AD
