I have a 96 Ranger 4.0 M5OD with the manual 1354. Recently, the CV in the driveshaft died, ripping the transfer case off the tranny...at 65mph... So now that I have that all fixed, I check under the truck every day to make sure all my bolts are still there and my seals are good. Before I started, I noticed the front seal was leaking a little bit so I put some stop leak in the tranny when I filled it back up. This all happened a week ago Friday, got it fixed and back on the road Wednesday. Today I noticed the leak has gotten severly worse. I know I'm gonna have to drop the tranny to fix it, which sucks in itself, but do I have to totally disassemble the tranny to replace the front seal or is it something I can just replace from the front side?

It can be replaced without disassembly. You will need to find a seal driver that will fit over the input shaft though

the front seal is in a housing behind the slave cylinder, just take the housing off... there's some shims in there though so just keep track of what's there.

Good to know, thanks! Now the question is can I slide the tranny back far enough to get to the seal without unhooking the clutch line?

no you can't. the clutch line is easy and doesn't need bleeding most of the time.

and yes i forgot you can take the input bearing housing off to access the seal also, but if you do that you will need to clean and reseal it really good with RTV
