What about an escape?

Like an 08-12 model.

4 cylinder should nail close to 30, and they are very reliable

the grey-t escape
The seats fold down in a hhr, it gets 26mpg with the automatic. That being said, I 2nd the nomination of a gen 2 escape. Love mine, its a awd V6 and will get 23 highway easily in the summer.

The four banger escape’s actually get worse highway mpg than the 4.0. Pushing a brick through the air and all that.

sounds like 90's tercel wagon and ford ranger are my options if i want something without automatic transmission or a bunch of electrical bullshit, lol
I always thought the explorer was basically just a ranger with a different body. i guess the body is much heavier.
why are there no 00's 4cyl vans that get better mpg than ranger?

...i asked my buddy about his hybrid escape and he says he gets like 25mpg ... eeeek. i hear hybrids are really only great at saving fuel with city driving.

I've found so many people use so many "options" when defining miles, as well as mpg.
I have never found a simple way to go with that statement

I start with a definition for "miles", the only accurate one I know of is on an interstate highway, and many toll roads.
The reason being, there are two factions at work in the construction of these type roads.
The builder, or contractor, who is making sure he gets paid for every foot that he has constructed,
and the county, city, or state government
who is making sure the contractor builds every foot he is paying for.

these roads are good places to check your speedometer, as well as your mileage if you are on it several hundred miles

Anything less may well be faulty

if they praise the vehicle, in my head i take 20% off their mpg claims
if theyre talking shit, i add 20% to their mpg claims, lmao,

My brother just got a 4 cylinder AWD '12 Escape and it gets 23ish mpg over the last 4k miles or so, get a manual transmission front wheel drive 4 cylinder and it'd probably do better...

FYI the 2.3L in the Rangers after mid '01 is known for better mileage than the old Lima's and has more power, that engine could probably be swapped into an explorer but it'd take some work... I kinda kick myself sometimes for not getting a Duratec Ranger when I got my '97 but I've been happy with my decision...

ive been wanting to upgrade to a truck with a duratech 2.3 but I was told maintaince/repairs on them are a little more involved, more cables, more lines, more sensors. I was also told the 2.5 is less fragile. I think I should still upgrade.

Not sure on the order Ines, but my wife's 2015 has the 2.5 duratech basic 4 cylinder and gets around 30 on the highway. Back seats fold forward to make a nice cargo area.

Stay away from the 1.6 ecosport engine and the 2021 model years...AJ

My buddy's Audi allroad. It's got a 2.0 turbo says he gets 25 to 30 mpg on 31s and a 2 inch lift. Plus awd with a center locker thing he was explaining to me but to be honest I wasn't listening too well haha

Those had a much more aero dynamic body. Although they seemed to be prone to having a lot of computer issues.

I have a friend with an '11 ( 2.3 auto Fwd. ) and he is around 20 on the highway 65+ MPH, but at lower speeds like 40/45 constantly cruising he will get almost 30.

Other then the low highway MPG I have never heard anyone say a bad thing about this generation of escape.

Wonder if hes got something wrong? Most her driving was 55-60mph cruising and got like 26-28. It would stay around that hwy.

Atleast according to the trip computer

Wifes was a 2010 with a 2.5/2wd

Grew up in the 70s, 80s, and 90s
i am not sure if parts are hard to find for those tercel wagons. i would think lots of parts interchange from a normal tercel or other toyota vehicles.

you could also look for one of those cool toyota vans from the 80s/90s like this. they came with optional 4x4, like the tercel wagons did. not sure if hte van got in the 30s but a friend had one when i was in high school in socal and we fit about 15 people squished into it so it would fit your space needs.

or a toyota previa. my mom had one and this was a super dependable van with tons of room. still didn't get hte 30mpg though.

i think mazda made a small van/wagon called an mpv that probably got good mileage and was tall enough. yup, google says mazda did make it and it could be had in 4x4 too

i knew that is what another buddy had. his was 4x4 also and we would take it to carry our surfboards for out of town surf trips when i moved to texas. my 85 f150 didn't get great gas mileage so
