Limited to 3k RPM?

1986 Ranger 2.9 auto 2WD. I floored it for a couple seconds or so while driving yesterday and it's like it hit a 3k rpm wall. It stuck exactly at 3k and held it; didn't go over that at all according to my tach and also what I was hearing. Doesn't affect normal driving at all because I rarely go above 2500ish rpm when getting up to speed, but was curious why this might be happening. I didn't see if it gets stuck at 3k in park/neutral.

Does speedometer work?

Clogged exhaust can limit RPM, as can clogged fuel filter

But 3,000RPM is pretty specific, its the REV limiter RPM when speed is at 0MPH or computer thinks Automatic trans is in Neutral/Park

No, it runs great under load. It just didn't budge past 3k.

The speedometer works fine, but I can't lie, I haven't checked the fuel filter once in my 2 year ownership of the truck. Fuel pressure at idle is a good 30-40 psi though. Exhaust is the same diameter pipe that it came with and the cats are gutted.

I dont think a 2.9 has a rev limiter.

I think it was just a fluke. I near floored it today (for science and definitely not for fun ) and it went from 1800-3800 then shifted fine. To answer your question though, it's timed right and the spouts plugged in
