i have a 87 ranger 2.9 when at idle and the a/c engages it causes a lot of drag on the engine drops rpm down 200-250 and sometimes just stall the engine. would this be a sign that the compressor itself it going bad or is there another problem im missing?

I doubt its compressor related, although I wouldn't rule it out totally. Does the A/C work normally otherwise, like if you're at road speed? If so, you could have other engine-related issues. For example, if the engine has low compression or low power, the A/C kicking in could cause the engine to stall at idle. One possible check you could do with the compressor, however, is to check the clutch hub for excessive resistance. With the engine off, try to rotate the center of the compressor pulley. If it binds in any fashion, you probably do have compressor issues. Just be sure not to confuse normal pressure from the refrigerant with actual mechanical binding. Hope that helps.

when at idle and the A/C kicks in, the fast idle is also suppose to kick on to raise the idle speed up, you might want to check it.
