I think the links would pretty much be useless it would be the same as running just leaf springs.

Many moons ago I looked into a 4-link and leafs. It's possible by allowing the axle tubes to rotate independently from the spring perches AND you need a Watt's link set up or a panhard bar. I think if you search hard enough you can find a manufacturer of the spring perch set up, check out drag race sites, same for the Watt's or panhard. If you can fab, build your own.

To me, it would bind.

The 3-link wants to move in its arc and the leaves would want to move in their up/down motion.

if you want links and leafs, search for threads about "quarter elliptical" suspension

oh yeah, coils are cheap. you can grab stock rear coils out of a number of vehicles, and mount them at whatever height you want.

The 4-link I described was for drag racing, rock crawling it would bind as described, unless you added a pivot point at the 'new spring perches'. I haven't fully thought it out, I'm sure it's possible. Maybe 'Orbit Eyes' instead of regular spring eye bushings? Probably not cost effective.

I read about that a while back, it's interesting. If I remember correctly, it was outlawed cause it gave too much advantage to whomever was running that setup. I'd agree with the coil spring unless your hampered by class rules [probably not applicable here].
