interchangeable transmission

i have a 90 ranger with a blown 5 speed mitsubishi transmission and i was wondering if an 89 ranger mazda transmission would work in it

Absolutely. The mazda m50d is the better transmission anyways.

you'll need to replace the removeable floor plate (four bolts) that the shift boot mounts toAnd carefully cut out a piece of carpet about half the size of a postcard from in front of the shifter and glue it to the floor behind the shifter because the mazda shifter is further forward, but other than that they are designed to be more or less interchangeable.

Will the clutch be the same, I meean can I leave the old fm145 clutch on the flywheel and have it slip together? Does the hyd clutch fitting work w both? I have changed this trany three times now... I orig put a used fm in it only to find out it was two inches shorter... I am almost thru.

Shoulda been clearer... I have a 91 ranger that had a 2.9 that went out and there is a 4.0 in there now. I tore the trans up in a hurry with all that power and have now found a mazda trans. I re-used the little clutch w that first set-up but can I get by without buying a new clutch pp and flywheel?
