Put a 4.0 in it.
The 2.9 was pretty well maxed stock. It can be blown, but that gets dicey with the head-cracking issue. Your engine should have the re-designed heads but I still wouldn't want more than 2 or 3 pounds boost.
The 4.0 is everything the 2.9 wasn't and then some. Best part is that is bolts right in place. It's stroked, bored, better cams, etc. You can't do any better than that if you want to get more out of a 2.9.
Putting a carb on a 2.9 while possible with enough effort, you won't make any more power with a carb. FI systems are designed to make optimum power, economy and emissions. With a carb you will get one of those at a time if you are lucky.
The final thing is, for any power gains you get by modding a 2.9, you will get the same power or more out of a 4.0 swap for a lot less.
