I'm in the market for a replacement and this guy hasn't sold it for a few weeks now. I have a 1987 Ranger 4x4 super-cab Custom that I will be upgrading to a 4.0L, ford 8.8, Dana 35, 4inch suspension lift, 2 inch body lift, and/or 31/33 inch tires in the summer. The 91 Ranger Donor vehicle that I'm looking at doesn't have a working transmission.

My question is how much do you guys think it's worth?

A4LD was used from 1985 to 1994, it looks like a 4x4 tailshaft so it would be 1990-1994, 5 years ago was 2010, so it WAS 16 to 20 years old when pulled, 22-26 years old now.
50k miles means it almost has to be a rebuilt.

Good read here on the A4LD and rebuilding
When having an A4LD rebuilt, there are a couple of things that you need to make sure of. First and foremost, do not let a shop do a soft parts fix only (clutches, servos, and bands). This will almost ensure that you will have another repair needed right after the 1-year warranty is out. Other things you want to have replaced are: forward one-way clutch (always), overdrive drum (stamped tin, replace if out of round or heat damaged), pump (Ford only, rebuilds are prone to failure), and the converter (get the better converter with the improved lock-up clutch and brazed fins).

You can roll the dice because used automatics are a big gamble, but I would see what a "good" rebuilt A4LD is going for first, hard parts not soft parts only.
That should give you an idea of what $400 roll of the dice is worth, if it lasts you 2 years that $200 a year but if you install it and nothing happens, no gears then...............waste of money.
Tough call when you can't test it, "see it working"

There is one on ebay, "as is" $300

How much are you willing to pay for a used transmission? If you are willing to pay for a standalone controller you could use a 5r55e. I'm not a fan of the A4LD, I had one fail in my 91 aerostar 4.0L van. I swapped it out for a T5 out of an 07 mustang.

From what others have said the 4.0l ADL4 is stronger than the 2.9l ADL4 that's currently in my 87. In the future I would like to upgrade to a 302 V8, but for now the V6 will do.

When I spend money on A4LDs I usually try to make it a negative number. That means you'd have to pay me to take it.
