You are trying to remove the fan clutch

2.9l should be Left handed threads so opposite direction of "normal" threads
Need to put wrench on the nut then hold the pulleys(strap wrench?) and turn the wrench clockwise looking at the front of fan, so opposite direction to loosen it than "normal" nut

So if I hold the pulley in place i should be able to loosen it?

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
Be a good time to replace that cracked fan.

Yes, if you have a strap wrench

Another way I have used is to loosen 2 of the 4 bolts near the nut and then use a longer screw driver between the 2 bolts, one under one over to prevent water pump shaft(pulleys) from turning, then turn the nut Clockwise

If you have a vise you can try clamping the exposed water pump shaft in the vise to prevent it from turning

Good work (y)

Just a general "rule of thumb"
If your engine uses "V" fan belts the fan clutch will be Left handed thread(clockwise to remove)

If a serpentine belt look at the water pump pulley
If pulley is smooth then regular threads
If pulley is ribbed then left handed threads

I know I’ve tried to find a new one but I can’t find anywhere that sells em
I believe (but can't swear in court) that you can use a fan for a 3.0 truck in your application. They're definitely both left hand thread, and some of the parts listings indicate it as a superceding part for yours.

If you're like me, swearing in court won't clear you. Whenever I work on a fan, I always end up leaving plenty of DNA evidence.
