If you dont have a 35 dis. nozzle let me know. You can mess with timing and pump cams all you want without the right dis. nozzle yot will never get rid of an off idle hesitation.

My timing is at 17 degrees how much more should I go
17 BTDC is about right in the sweet spot for most Fords, a tad high, but about right where it should be.. Did you remove the slack from the accellerator pump linkage ?

If you have a vacuum advance distributor, is the vacuum diaphram working ? You can test it simply by sucking on the hose and watching for the movement in the breaker plate.

Can also use a timing light and watch the timing marks and race the motor up timing should increase.

Nope. The timing will move due to the centrifugal advance, just not as quickly as with the vacuum assist. I had the pod go bad on the Ranger a few years ago and it plain sucked, had a bad hesitation.

Is the advance working properly ? If it's slow you'll get a hesitation.

The msd distributor came with a set of advance springs of different rates but I changed them a few times and it didn't seem to make a difference

Have you tried advancing the timing to where it pings when you goose it. Fords like to be advanced as far as possible without pinging under a load. go abut 40 mph or so and goose it adjust the timing until it pings and back off to where it almost pings. I read that on pony carbs and with the msd ignition dont you have both mechanical and electronic advance features with the weaker spring it will advance sooner. Try advancing the timing between 37-40 at about 3500 rpm or just play with the ping.

37 to 40 degrees is dangerous on an engine with less than 12:1 compression the higher compression motors require more timing to burn all the fuel off. My 347 is 10.82:1 and i run 35 degrees total and it is all in at 1800 rpms. To much timing when its not needed will cause over heating, blown head gaskets and can burn the top out of cast pistons.

try using the lightest springs (small silver ones) rev motor to 3000 and set timing at 33 and lock it down. Then chech at idle. You still need a bigger discharge nozzle to get rid of hesitation.

I`m just throwing out things you can try. As I have said I did alot of research and was on ponycarbs.com. They were saying all fords especially V-8 run best with the timing as far advanced as possible without pinging.
