I have my engine torn down to the block crank and pistons, I’m trying to get the timing cover off and I need to take the crank pulley off but no matter what I try I can’t get the pulley to stop spinning when I try and loosen it, I don’t have an impact that’s strong enough and the transmission is off so I can’t put it in gear. Does anyone know how I can stop the pulley from spinning?

Oil pan off?
Wedge a crow bar in against the block to stop crank rod journal from turning

If heads are on put a rope down spark plug hole with its piston down and feed it in so there is a bit coiled up inside
Turn the crank counter-clockwise until rope/piston compresses against the head
Then remove bolt
And no it can't hurt piston or head, they receive far more force when that cylinder fires
