I have a 1989 Ranger STX running 31" x 10.50 tire with 2.9 V6 and 5 speed , I need to regear.
I'm looking for feed back from people with 31" tires and 4.10 or 4.56 gearing.
I know the 4.10 would be better for the highway- but off road the 4.56 would be better.
What kind of RPM s are running 65 mph?

This is not a daily driver mpg not a big priority.

Thanks,

with my 2.3, 31's and 4.10's it wasn't enough gear to hold highway speed in 5th until 65+...

I have no idea what your 5th gear ratio is, but if you find out then you can use the calculator to find out what rpm you would be running. Enter "1" for the t-case if you will be high range.

4.56.. end of story.. if you ever plan on going to 33's, you can live with 4.56's then to probably... but...

4.0 swap is nice lol

I run 33's and use a 4:10 and I get great power and great gas milage as well. It is a dd and I go trail riding at least twice a month.

My choptop is a 2.9L 5-speed with 4.10 gears and 33's. It's not bad to drive at all like that, only it would be nice if I had 4.56 when I'm trying to crawl off-road (it'll still go pretty slow though in 4-lo, needle doesn't move off the peg until the upper end of second gear).

I had 31" tires on it for about a week one summer and didn't like it. Seemed like a bit much gear for 31's although it probably would have crawled good.

Right now I'm looking at going to 35's and not sure if I want to go to 4.88 or 5.13.

Other than a motor that has run like a raped ape since I dropped it in (was out of an earlier Bronco II that was totalled), the only drivetrain performance mod I've done is put the bigger throttle body on. Still gets 17-18 mpg in the summer.
