I have an 86 4x4 Ranger with the 2.9 auto. It has the canister type fuel filter mounted between the tank and fuel pump. The cap for the canister is cracked on mine and I cannot find the correct one. Most of them at the junk yard are in-line filters but I did find one with a canister. The problem is that the cap in the junk yard was about 3" deep and mine is 1 1/2" deep. I do not believe I have the room for the deeper cap. I cannot get the cap at the parts store and haven't checked the dealership yet since they are closed. So I thought I would start here. Does anyone have a cap that is 1 1/2" deep or is it possible to install an inline filter instead of the canister. Thanks for your help.

yes you can install / use the inline filter instead of the canister unit.

the "taller" canister is considered a reservoir...and no filter is to go in there.

mine too was cracked...I managed to patch it back together with a JB weld product...Waterweld? water something anyway. It still weeps..rather it always damp or looks wet, but leaves no puddles.

may plan is to use the taller unit/reservoir and put a inline filter in, but in a more accessible area.
