I am new to Rangers and I was wondering about my Gas Cap. In the past most of my caps would go in and then tighten and make a ratchet sound to show that it was tight. The one on my 2002 Ranger goes in and will only turn one Click. Is that the way they are supposed to operate. If the cap was faulty would it affect my emissions? Can it affect the way the truck runs? I am certain it is OEM and probably the original. With 160K miles.
It is a 3.0 litre.

I replaced my cap with a locking one, but If I remember the OEM cap closed in one click.

Yes. You'll get a check engine light if the cap does not seal properly.

On my 02 the cap tightens & clicks once as described, also my cluster has a light that tells you to "check fuel cap", if it is not tight.

Thanks guys. All of my past vehicles have been Chevies, and they all have a ratchet effect. I don't have any lights on so I guess it is sealing properly.
Good to know.

Yep, Ford calls it a 1/8th cap, because thats how far they turn. If you look at it you can see where it clicks and pulls itself in.
