I've been wanting to do an engine swap in my 97 4.0 4x4 for a while now.
At first, I wanted to do a 4BT Cummins but those are hard to find and really expensive when they are found.
Then I thought of the OM617 Mercedes straight 5 but they don't have the torque I want and bolting it up to a 4x4 transmission would be a chore.
Then I remembered I had a 5.0 from a 96 Explorer sitting in my Fox coupe that I'm getting ready to sell. I still have all the accessories from when I pulled it but the intake is long gone.
So, since I don't have emissions in my county, I'm going to run a carburetor. Holley offers a throttle position sensor for their carbs so hopefully this will allow me to keep cruise control.
The few questions I have are:
1. Who makes proper motor mounts for the Windsor motors that bolt directly into the pre 97 4x4 frames?
2. Has anyone here run the James Duff long tube headers?
3. I want to be able to run a manual transmission. That is a requirement. The 97+ 4.2 F-150 XL's shifter sits right where the Ranger's hole is and the bellhousing bolts to the 302, but, with a Mustang flywheel anyway, the starter won't engage the flywheel. Has anyone used a M5OD-R2 from a 97+ in a Ranger?
4. Do I have to have a body lift for the install? I'd really rather stay clear of doing that.
