I recently purchased a 1992 4x4 ford ranger 5 speed with the 2.9l and 132k miles, well long story short a week later it lost oil pressure, blew a head gasket and had serious lifter knock, So i purchased a 1991 4x2 auto with 53k miles that i was told had the 4.0l but when i got home and looked a little closer I found it to actually have a 3.0l... I plan to do a engine swap but dont know if the 3.0l will bolt to the 2.9l 5 speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I need to get this truck goin ASAP.

Nope. You will need the 3.0 transmission

Do they make a adapter plate or could I modify the autos bellhousing to work? I did some Google research and saw people swaped fm146 transmissions with m50d's so im kinda confused.

Same trans, etc. Why bother sticking to a 2.9?
because the 4.0 will rip that 2.9 trans up after a wile.

but you are lucky you don't have a new enough truck you don't have to swap the dash out... i just got a 91 4.0 to swap into my 88 ranger then found out i have to swap dash and all :bawling: so now i have to sell both as parts as I'm so dang fed up not funny....

best of luck!

Is there any way to make the 2.9l distributor work on a 4.0l?
