Eliminating Catalytic Converters on The "Y" Pipe

I have a 2000 3.0 l with 2 catalytic converters on the Y pipe. Will it hurt anything if I were to remove them and use a Y pipe without the converters?

You will get a check engine light with cat codes and usually EGR codes also. If you roll into the inspection shop to get your sticker with the check engine light burning, will they pass it?

Is it legal? No

Is there any real benifit? No

I don't know about your cats on the Y pipe, but mine are what I refer to as pre-cats. They are closer to the heads an get hot quicker than the main cats and work sooner. The fuel trim O2 sensors are before those cats and should not trigger an engine check light if the cats are removed. The emissions O2 sensor is after the main cat and removal of the pre-cats could cause an out of compliance code until the main cats gets up the temperature.

As said before, you would gain nothing by removing the Y-pipe cats except a little money if they are going bad. You could also get a huge fine if you remove them.
