man its been a while sense I poasted but I got off my but this weekend and rinished putting my motor all back together and running. the motor is a 89 5.0 HO just got it all rebuilt anywho I choose a o reilly auto parts high volume oil pump and I upgraded with a ARP oil pump shaft. Now my problem is that I can not get the distrubutior to sit down all the way. I know its sitting in the shaft cause im getting oil pressure, ive taking it out many times trying to stab it in cranking on it or when the engine is running i cant get it to sit down. when i got the oil pump and shaft i didnt check the length so im hoping there is another way around this besides pulling the engine tearing it all apart and what not... im lost any help?:dunno:

Measure the gap between the bottom of the distributor & the spot where it sits on the engine....

either grind some off the botton end of the distributor shaft...

or go to a junkyard & get a dist. with a shorter shaft......

Are you sure the shaft isn't for a 351?

EDIT: Scratch that, I believe the 351 uses a 5/16" shaft and the 302 uses a 1/4" shaft.

Is the cam and/or gear on the dizzy new? When you said you cranked it, was the rotor turning? Oil pressure?

EDIT 2: Also could be the retainer washer playing tricks on you..... you did use one, right?

I ordered the shaft for a 302. The cam and the dissy are the same ones I used previously on this engine. And it worked great. The only thing I changed was for a high volume oil pump and a the thicker arp shaft. I don't know my thing about a washer. There was one on the shaft like in your pic. Yes I'm getting full oil pressure. And yes the rotor is turning. The engine runs great I just can't get it to sit all the way down. I can't put the little locking tab on that holds the dizy down. Just needs like 1/4 to sit all the way down. I'm gonna measure it up tomarrow like door gunner said see what I get. ARP-1547904 oil shaft

That sounds like the retainer washer is not in the correct place.

I had that same issue when assembling my engine.

IIRC, I had to move the washer toward "the long end" so the shaft would sit lower in the oil pump, allowing the distributor to seat correctly.

that washer is suppose to on the upper side toward the intake and sits below were the dizzy sits on the inside (hope that makes sense) so the shaft wont pop out of the pump. from what I get out of it anyways. i double checked the shaft the one I orderd is for a 302. either way ill figure somthing out

Can you try to push it down while someone bumps the starter?

Tryed it many times and with it running. I just don't want to let it run for to long would hate to chew up the cam gear or dizzy gear. Can't check on it today sense it's raining but I'm gonna get to the bottem of this. Thanks for all your inputs

Ah finally got it in. With the arp shaft I got I guess the retaining washer was just a little high. Little tap tap with a hammer and bam it pushed the washer down and it's in. Thanks for the replays guys
