It's got 3.73's in the 8.8, but it only does a "1 wheel peel".

I think you've actually got the 7.5.....though I could be wrong.

My 95 with the 2.3 came with the 7.5 and my understanding was any four banger came with the 7.5 unless it was swapped by someone. If it only does a one wheel peel I would also say open diff.

+1 on the above, prob a 7.5, you could have a limited slip and the clutch packs could be worn out ???

It's an 8.8 for sure. I didn't know the code on the tag for l/s. I'll check. I just fixed a leaking cover & wanted to know if I needed to add the friction modifier, but I guess if it's one wheel peel it's a moot point lol.

yeah it's a l/s unit then. don't worry about the friction modifier. leave it out. it wont hurt anything to run without, and it may even help to tighten up the worn out clutches in there now.

If anything you can always check the door tag, look for something that says Axle or Axle code and it'll tell you what it is, and normally that is what is under the truck unless it has been swapped out. Ford DID make a light duty 8.8 that used the same size crosspin as the 7.5(how do i know this?) well i bought an 8.8 out of a 2002 4.0 ext cab 2wd ranger and that tag read 3.55 8.8 and the code was R5 i think, which turned out to be 3.55 L/S 8.8. but i didnt know it had the smaller crosspin until i took the cover off. I ordered a new set of gears 4.56's from 4wheelparts and they said i needed the notched pin so i got it and its WAY too big, so i called them and told them what was going on and to find out wth is up. Well after about a week of phone tag, the tech told me he talked to a local ford dealer and they ahd said that it was a RARE light duty 8.8, it is an 8.8 but its a light duty one. Apparently they only put them in for a couple years. So now i've got a full richmond spool going in and i dont need the notched pin anymore lol(easier than looking for a diff L/S carrier.

28 spline 8.8s have the 3/4" pin, 31 spline 8.8s ('87up) have a 7/8" pin.

And yes, if you got a 8.8 behind your 2.3L, it most likely was swapped in at some point.
