If anything you can always check the door tag, look for something that says Axle or Axle code and it'll tell you what it is, and normally that is what is under the truck unless it has been swapped out. Ford DID make a light duty 8.8 that used the same size crosspin as the 7.5(how do i know this?) well i bought an 8.8 out of a 2002 4.0 ext cab 2wd ranger and that tag read 3.55 8.8 and the code was R5 i think, which turned out to be 3.55 L/S 8.8. but i didnt know it had the smaller crosspin until i took the cover off. I ordered a new set of gears 4.56's from 4wheelparts and they said i needed the notched pin so i got it and its WAY too big, so i called them and told them what was going on and to find out wth is up. Well after about a week of phone tag, the tech told me he talked to a local ford dealer and they ahd said that it was a RARE light duty 8.8, it is an 8.8 but its a light duty one. Apparently they only put them in for a couple years. So now i've got a full richmond spool going in and i dont need the notched pin anymore lol(easier than looking for a diff L/S carrier.
