I've read that these transmissions are prone to failure, but it could be a couple different things. I'm trying to determine what the actual problem is, so I know if it's worth fixing it.
The transmission is in an 02 explorer with a 4.6, this is my dads vehicle, so most of this is second hand info. It suddenly and harshly downshifted out of 5th while cruising back roads. Shifting from 1-2 is delayed, you have to let off the throttle to coax it to shift. Once it does, it can be sloppy or harsh, I haven't figured out any pattern.
Dad pulled the pan and found a small piece of debris, said the rest of this piece seemed to be ground up. He's cut his losses, bought something new, and I have possession of the vehicle. If I can definitively determine its a valve body or solenoid pack or whatever, I'll probably swap it myself and have a nice vehicle for winter. If it's a broken band or other hard parts, I'll probably just get rid of it. Hooping one of you transmission gurus has some insight for me, it would be greatly appreciated.
