Ok guys, I did a 4.0 swap awhile ago and I've been using the FM146behind my 4.0 it held up fine but now I got a transmission to replace it with, a Toyo Koygo 5 speed, that came from a 4.0 explorer now, I know there a length difference between the FM and Toyo of like 2-3 inches, so my ideas are the following (P.S. a M50D-R1 4x4 version nearly IMPOSSIBLE to come by where I live) SO idea 1) find a ranger with the same transmission and wheel base and take the drive shaft 2) I've wanted to do a Chevy leaf spring swap for the lift and springs,so if i did that and moved the front shackles would that compensate for the distance of space needed for the drive shaft or would I need to move all four shackles to compensate for it? 3) Am i just crazy? I got the transmission out of a ford explorer control trac 4wd 1991 eddie bauer 4.0 ohv Toyo-Kogyo 5 speed... was the toyo kogyo ever put behind the 4.0? The trans code came up T when i looked it up it was 1992+ model T were automatic a4ld ones. But nothing for the T code for 1991 and below manual of before 92+. The explore was stock manual so i know it was not a automatic. The fm146 and M50D are the same length and the toyo is shorter, I believe this is atoyo, I had to move cross member and lengthen my drive shaft. Ill post picture when i can, is this odd?

I have never ever seen or heard of a TK5 being put into an explorer from the factory. All of the manual explorers got M5OD transmissions. Are you sure you don't have an M5OD transmission and just don't realize it?

The orange one a FM146 what do you think the silver one is? I pulled it off a 4.0 1991 Eddie Bauer edition 4wd explore.

Very interesting....

Your silver trans looks very similar to my Toyo trans, 1986, and 1987,

2 wheel drive, except for the rear section.

My literature says Toyos, were from 1983 to 1987, but does not say,

2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive....:shok:

Are you sure that the Explorer had a 4.0, not a 5.0?

First off, I don't even know what an "Explorer Control Trac" is.

Second, that trans has a removable bell housing and an external slave cylinder.

From the factory the 4.0 Explorer would have had an M5OD for a manual trans. There were NO other options, BUT the M5OD has neither a removable bell nor an external slave, EVER.

This means that trans was not original to the vehicle you took it from.

Those two things also mean that it may well be a TK5.

Also, looking at the Manual trans ID page in the tech library, those two oval-shaped pieces on the driver's side of the case seem to be hallmarks of the TK transmissions.

Lets assume it a tk5 would it be good for a 4.0? Maybe a mustang tk5 coverted 4x4? Or ranger early tk5?

The Mustang didn't get a TK5, they had a T5 which is a wholly different transmission.

It would not be my first choice for use behind a 4.0, but if you got it out of an Explorer, go ahead and try it. It may live for a while.

Hmm, a m50d 4x4 really hard to come by here... I have a fm146 but i hear she maybe need to be replaced? soon... would the word lengthen drive shaft, move cross member, worth the Tk 5 or fund a M50d... I like the 3.7 first gear from fm146 tk5 got 3.9 first gear plus , 4.0 four low, would be amazingly low... The feeling of crawling is amazing...
