Please forgive me if I'm not doing this properly or if I post this in the wrong place. I recently changed out the cam position sensor in my 98 4.0 Ranger. When I compared the new one with the old one I noticed a difference and decided to do a little more investigating and I'm glad I did. If I'm doing this right, here's a picture of the old sensor:
[/IMG] As you can (hopefully) see when compared with the new one:
[/IMG] there is a magnet that is soldered onto the metal bracket. The solder joint failed causing the magnet to drop into the top of the synchronizer. This is very difficult to see unless you have a mirror and a flashlight.
One other thing I noticed is that one of the retaining bolts holding the cam position sensor itself is difficult as well unless you have a 5.5mm wrench as there is not enough room to get even a 1/4 inch drive rachet onto the one side. I was "lucky" as mine was only on finger tight. It was also easier to access from the passenger side wheel well.
