We have recently just bought a TCI Sizzler torque converter and we have a bit of a problem. When the trans is not hooked up to the motor the motor turns over by hand easily, but when it's hooked up to the engine it won't turn over, even with a breaker bar. We took the trans off to try a different converter, now the converter is stuck on the input shaft. It clicked 2 when installing and turns no problem but just won't come out...It's a '74 HD C-4 on a 302.

The torque converter is not installed all the way in and if you keep tightening it down you could cause some severe tranny damage. Stop right now and pull the trans back down and pull the converter out and inspect its hub and look into the trans with a flash light and look for anything that doesnt look right. If all looks good the reinstall the torque converter and twist it while sliding it in and it should lock in three times. Once its in you should have about 1.5 to 2" from the part of the bellhousing the touches the block to the bottom of the torq. stud where it touches the flexplate.

well the trans was pulled back out before i posted but the converter was stuck...but out of impatience we yanked the converter out, along with inner input shaft!!...it's stuck inside the converter right now, which dosen't make any sense cuz it went on no problem!

There are two diffrent input shafts and they have diffrent splines a 24 and a 26. The 24 were used up to 69 and the 26's were 70 and newer but that dont stop people from mixing and matching internals so you will need to count the splines and double check which converter you have to make sure that they match. I would also have some one pull apart the trans to make sure that you didnt mess anything up inside when you bolted the trans to the engine and locked them up. Do it now or you could be pulling it back apart again to do it later.

thanks for replying, sorry for taking up forum space...but it's fixed now...took it to a tranny shop and they pulled it out and it's turns out someone in the past put a 26 spline inner shafter in and the converter requires 24. so it was jammed in, but it's out, new 24 shaft in and everything bolted right up. so close to startup!!
