I just got an '01 Explorer cheap as the PO had swiped a sign down the side of the truck, broke a headlight, wrinkled the fender, broke the mirror off... all stuff i can fix fairly easily.

The worst issue that I've found so far is that the power locks are not so good. I degreased the one on the drivers side and it works fine if the door is open. If I close the drivers door, it only pops about half way up & won't unlock the door so I have to open it with the inside handle.

On the passengers side I hear the actuator woking and the lock is trying to move but - very little. I've got power, the actuators work and the locks will go down in the lock position, they just won't unlock fully.

Any suggestions ? This stuff is all new to me but I have gotten the door panels off & kinda understand how things work inside. Just not sure which parts to start replacing/repairing.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

The actuators are shot. It takes more effort to unlock the door than it does to lock it.

i recently had this problem on my moms explorer. turned out to be a broken spring in the door latch assembly. replaced the latch, works great now. its a real bitch getting the linkages off, and even worse back on, and make sure u get the outside door handle linkage adjusted properly. take all the slack out of the linkage before u snap the clip into place. i hope this helps, it took me 3 days(part time) to figure it out!

yup, linkages

I found out that if i hold up on the linkage going to the outside handle while cycling the lock, it works fine. There doesn't seem to be any spring pressure on the passengers latch compared to the drivers side.

Someone has been into it before because i found electrical tape on the outside passengers linkage at the handle. Was guessing actuators too & I'm sure that's only a matter of time before they need replacing.

Thanks for the help guys.
