Another 4.0 ohv to 4.0 SOHC swap question

I know what a DSM is. I own a Cobra... I've seen quite a few DSMs get smaller and smaller and smaller and smaller in my rear view mirror.:icon_rofl:
oh really what year Cobra???

I was only point out the fact I enjoy fast cars, back on topic Do you think the sohc would be worth the hassle ? It sounds pretty straight forward and would only take a little more or less than a week.

Man, I wanted to get in on the car talk...but I get the impression my BII is more welcome than my Evo X. I bought the Deuce to tow the car to the track, and got side tracked, and started working on it more than I should. Lol. Pics of the Cobra! *drool*

But seriously I am would still like advice on which engine I should go with. I do plan on towing vehicles in the future. I really like the idea of extra hp, but the damn timing chain scares me. Did Ford ever make revised parts for that by chance?

It's a '94 cobra ( the ugly body style).


Honestly, I've owned 4 SOHC engines. Everyone of the damn things rattled like a can full of marbles. I worried every time I floored it "this could be the last time". With my OHV engines, I thought "Is the A4LD going to blow up.... Who cares, I'll just swap a M5 in." I never had ANY concerns about the engine.

My friend actually has a 2003 gt with a cobra engine in it. Pretty nice car, but the transmission needs replaced, just a little weak for that engine, (Or someone abused the hell out of it.) I prefer 1st gen. The new ones look pretty good, going back to their roots.
Thanks, the timing chains were my biggest concern. I was worried that the timing chain would eventually come off at some point no matter what.
Im curious did any of the timing chains ever come off on you or anything else should I know about?

My Cobra is putting 360hp to the ground. That's about the limit I want to test a stock 302 block to.

I've never had SOHC with a timing chain that let go, I have seen over a dozen that have had a catastrophic timing chain failure.

360hp, sounds like a pretty fun ride :icon_cheers: Im hoping to get about 300hp out of the eclipse, I could definately do more because the block is built, but I would like to get decent mpg and I am in college so I dont have the money to blow on more performance parts.

But back on topic replacig the timing tensioner sounds like a must and also is it known weather or not Ford ever made a revised Timing tensioner for these motors?

They never really fixed the tensioners... They tossed a few band aids at it, then stopped using it in anything. It must not be good business to have engines throw timing chains through the valve cover.

You aint kidding. Once i got north of 400 i was getting nervous, (not a 302 obviously) so i bored, stroked, sleeved and built. Then i was like "well hell now it woukd be silly not to go for more power..." and on and on. So i eat a lot of ramen now. Lol.

Are the bell housing bolt patterns the same between the OHV and the SOHC? If you didn't have to swap the trans, I could understand doing this swap. If the trans has to be replaced to, then you might as well just do a 5.0 or look into boosting the OHV.

As a former SOHC owner, I can say that the durability definitely had me worried. The truck made it to 180,000 before I got rid of it, but I didn't trust it enough to drive long distances. If the timing chains had both been in front of the engine, I would have just replaced everything, and driven it for another 100,000, but since the engine has to be pulled completely to get to the rear timing chain, I was never ambitious enough To do it.

If I get one from the modle years 98-2000 then I believe they do have the same bolt pattern, but when they started using the 5 speed automatic in 2001 I believe the bolt pattern was slightly different.

If I do decide to get a SOHC then I will definately be replacing the the timing chain and pully

The 2.9, 4.0 OHV, and SOHC use almost exactly the same bolt pattern. The SOHC has 1 bolt that was moved to clear the timing chain (the top right one as viewed from the rear.) I'm running an OHV trans behind a SOHC with the 1 bolt missing... Works fine for me.


5r55Es had both bolt patterns.

just tried the "Glove" over the radiotor trick and coolent kept being pushed into the glove. When I would force the Coolent back down, Air bubbles would come up and through the radiotor Resivoir.

Also some water was leaking onto that screw wasn't sure simply a lose hose or what?

So from what I read I imagine this would indicate a blown or leaking head gasket?
Thoughts?

Hey guys finally got around to tearing down the truck and the head gasket was blown in the two back cylinders. On top of that the cam shaft, rockers and pushrods are all shot.

I was think about buying new heads, camshaft, pushrods, and rockers and call it a day.

But I was considering about maybe doing 302 5.0 swap from an explorer, but I dont believe my transmission and the 302 would bolt up. Can anyone tell me what I would have to do to make the 302 work with my 99 ranger??

The 4.0 sohc I pretty much drop in.

Bc I am seriously thinkg just going with a engine swap bc of the head problem the 4.0 OHV has.

Also is it easier to remove the engine and leave the trans in the truck or is it easier to pull them both out together???
