A4LD Issue
I recently bought a 1990 Ranger with a 2.9 automatic. Motor runs like new. The trans is a problem. It shifts into reverse perfect, first and second shift is perfect also. But theres no third or o/d. The previous owner said the trans just stopped working one morning. He said there never was an issue with the trans. What could have made the trans just drop 3rd and o/d? Truck isn't high mileage, but i know that doesn't mean a great deal. Any help is appreciated

Well i looked around the trans today. The vacuum line was undone off the trans. The trans shifts into 1st-2nd-3rd very easy. But still no o/d. When i put it in o/d i can hear some faint rattling and it just slips. If i put it in drive it works fine, but if i shift it into o/d while going down the road it slips and quits pulling. I noticed that the temp gauge isn't working. So i checked to see it was plugged up, it was but the coolant temp sensor was all busted up. Not sure if that sensor has anything to do with o/d slipping. Any thoughts?

The coolant sensor has nothing to do with the transmission not shifting into O/D. If the transmission is attempting to shift into O/D and you hear a rattling noise then the lockup clutch inside the torque convertor may be fried. which means a new TC is needed.
