The warlock and midnight express were just dress up packages werent they?

After doing some research i need to retract my other post. The lil red express actually had a hot 360 in it, 78 was the fastest year (emissions got them in 79) and could run 0-60 in 7.5seconds, 0-100 in 19.9 and topped out at 118.

The Warlock might have been a dress up package

But the Midnight Express was done by an outside company, kind of like the way Carroll Shelby did with the Mustangs.

Warlock is the original sports truck*, although it still had a useful payload capacity (Actually, the useable payload was part & parcel to both the Warlock and Lil Red Express packages - by going to GVWR over 6,100lbs, Dodge didn't have to meet light truck emissions i.e. no catalytic converters and Police Pursuit engines.)
There are factory Warlocks with the 440 supposedly via factory special order/400 big block for certain in '76-78. There is also at least 1 factory 4x4 Warlock.
*Is the El Camino, a Sport Ute, not a truck? The '65 El Camino with 350hp/327 is probably a contender...

I think THIS was Ford testing the waters as competition to the 454SS trucks of the same era, and the precursor to the 1st gen Lightning.

What was the F-150 Nite?

2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum Black Edition: The Nite ...

Back in 1992, the Ford F-Series XLT Lariat "Nite" truck offered standard 5.0-liter V-8 power with a blacked-out appearance package that included deep-dish forged aluminum wheels, a darkened grille, and body stripes over a black paint job.Aug 24, 2023

From Wikipedia

F-150 Nite (1991–1992)[edit]
Sold from 1991 to 1992 on the Ford F-150 XLT Lariat, the Nite special edition was a monochromatic option package, featuring black paint and trim with a multicolor accent stripe. For 1991, it was exclusive to the regular-cab F-150; for 1992, it was available on all body styles of the F-150 and introduced on the Ford Bronco.

The Nite edition was available with two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with either the 5.0L or 5.8L V8; it also included a sport suspension and alloy wheels on 235/75R15 white-letter tires.

Its possible.

One thing that always kinda puzzled me though....is why didnt ford just plop the 460 in a 1/2 ton shortbox 2wd to compete with the SS?

I watched a retro review (i think) where they did a head to head and IIRC the ford actually handled better then the chevy, but in a straight line the 454 ate it. A 460 coulda pry beat it in the 1/4.

Fords performance offerings IMO have always been kinda half assed compared to GM, and even more so compared to mopar.

Fords performance offerings IMO have always been kinda half assed or over the deep end - e.g. 427 SOHC, 427Fairlane GT, Boss 302/429 Mustangs.e tc

Actually...you gotta go back further then the 454SS

Dodge offered the lil red express in 79...

View attachment 105999

Factory 440 and the quickest domestic production vehicle of 79...even beating a vette to 60.

Earlier on they had the 413 wedge trucks, that im sure coulda held their own in a street brawl, but they werent billed as "performance" trucks
Hot Wheels just put out a "Valentine's Edition" but has dropped the OG version a few times over the years, they call it a '78

Sweet! I love the pipes. Those old trucks may not have been aerodynamic, but they were so light that they could easily make for a good 0-60 with the right engine. Also notice that the front end has been lowered.

Shit i totally forgot they were around in 78 too. I agree the 78's looked better
I have also forgotten. The Ranger might be a little heavier than those old trucks, but it is still very light. A big engine version could have been quite popular.

Ford didn't build it because they said it was too much for the average driver to handle.

I'd have bought one. And would still have it as well. If it wasn't wrapped around a phone pole. LOL!!

Maybe a supercharger is a little much. Maybe a sports truck does not need to beat out a Mustang or a Corvette. Maybe just a small V8 or even a beefed up 6 would have sold to that theoretical "average driver."

The 427 was pretty rare and atleast from what ive read wasnt a HEMI by any means. The 429 mustang was cool untill you realize a 460 would of slid right in....you know...like GM did with 454's and mopar did with 440's.

Dodge was building turbo'ed minivans in the 80's that would run with a foxbody for shits sake.

GM was sticking 5.3L's into trailblazer SS's while the explorer got stuck with a pretty mundane 4.6L

Dodge built friggin dakotas with 4.7L's, shortbeds, and 5 speeds...i knew a guy had one....it was wicked.

Ford left and still leaves alot of cool options on the table.

Most recent comes to mind is the bronco...the wrangler is available in certain models with a 5.7L...and the bronc gets stuck with a 4? When the 5.0 is right there?
