My mom has a 99 Sable 3.0L and it has started running rich. It has 256K on it but the motor runs really good but it has started running rich when she starts it up. Are the systems for the engine control anything like what's on my 87 Ranger?

I would guess....never lol. It seems to run rich (gas smell) when it's first started. The computer doesn't use info from the O2 sensor until it warms up....correct?

Similar, but more advanced.

The computer will use info from the O2s before it gets fully warm, but it will run in open loop for about 30 seconds to a minute. If you are only getting the fuel smell at start up it may be time for plugs, wires, and coil. It may also be the cats starting to fail. They do wear out after a while, and they work much better warm than cold. They reach peak efficiency above 400* F.
