I'm having problems with my 96 4.0 ranger it was running really rough and missing bad. I couldn't figure out what the problem was so I ended up taking it into town to are local shop. It ended up being a bad egr valve. Well it and all the lines and everything it connected to is apperently so rusty it would be very hard to put a new one back on as there was nothing left to attach it to. The mechanic suggested blocking it off and not running one. Will this affect anything like mileage or make the trucks computer screwy.

Fuel economy may be effected, the degree to which you notice it will be most heavily influenced by your driving. EGR is used almost exclusively while cruising, so if you are like me and only drive in town you will probably never notice it.

You will have a check engine light though.

If it is causing other issues then I'd say get rid of it for now as you can't make things worse. If it causes you distress not having it down the road you can always invest in repairing it correctly later.

Then you may notice the EGR being gone, but it won't be drastic. You might lose 1 or 2 MPG, you won't loose 5 or 10.

Like I sad before, if it is causing the engine to run poorly, or not at all, loosing it for now so you can keep driving the truck will be better than leaving it there and having an undriveable vehicle. If you don't do something stupid to close it off permanently you should be able to round up parts to fix it properly later, when you have the money.
