I have a chance to pick a 92 4wd 4.0 5speed 2 door explorer, my plan would be to swap a 85 regular cab, short box ranger body onto the 92 frame, are the explorer frames pretty much the same as the rangers of that era?

No not the same but they are "frames".

I think I read from the trans support to the front they are similar, but not exact match.
Then in the rear I believe the explorer frame is narrower, I know when you swap axles the axle supports do not match.
Also check wheel base I don't think that will match, so..........

But anything can be done, just depends on how much time and of course money, you want to spend on it.

Swapping the '92 power train to '85 would be easier but that would be based on '85 being 4x4 with good frame which is probably not the case since you are thinking of swapping bodies :)
